The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
