Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
